Does Mold Exposure Contribute to Alzheimer’s Disease?
Studies continue to validate that exposure to mold is is one of the main causes of many mental illnesses and diseases that are currently infecting millions of people around the world.
Research now shows that mold may be one of the main cause of Alzheimer’s Disease, a progressive and fatal brain disease. The scientific data, symptoms, and similarities between Alzheimer’s disease and people who suffer from a mold illness are becoming irrefutable.
The toxin-producing “black mold” Stachybotrys, as well as and other neurotoxic molds, including Aspergillus, Chaetonium, and Wallemia can have a dramatic effect on the brain and behavior. There are 2 main effects of mold exposure. First is the physical airway irritating effects like allergies, cough and fatigue. Second are the more concerning effects on the central nervous system (CNS) and the brain. CNS symptoms can include brain fog, inability to concentrate, depression, sleep disorders, anxiety, irritability, headache, and confusion.
Unfortunately, there is about a 99.9% chance that anyone presenting with these symptoms will never have mold considered as part of the differential diagnosis. It is simply not on the radar screen of the vast majority of physicians. When was the last time your doctor asked you if your home had a water leak? Point made.
Issues in the home are not the only problem; many workplaces in Panama are also contaminated with mold, especially older buildings. Schools, office buildings, hotels, and industrial complexes are all at risk of dangerous mold levels in the tropical environment of Panama. Ever go into a building in Panama that smells musty or you see black patches on the wall or ceiling?
We have done numerous assessments in Panama and it is frightening and chilling how bad mold contamination is within the offices, schools, hotels we visit. For children in school or office workers, the last thing we need is for them to have poorly functioning brains due to toxic mold exposure!
Alzheimer’s disease is now the third leading cause of death in the United States, following only cardiovascular disease and cancer. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which is the most common form of dementia accounting for 60 to 80 percent of all cases. That includes 11 percent of those age 65 and older, and one-third of those 85 and older. Some people begin experiencing symptoms as early as their 30’s.
The disease also impacts more than 15 million family members, friends, and caregivers.(1) It has also been estimated that there will be 16 million Americans and 106 million people worldwide with AD by 2050.
